Jakarta’s micro and small enterprises (MSEs) — often described as the lifeblood of the city’s informal economy — present a portrait of both adaptability and vulnerability. A new report from the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion offers a granular view of how these businesses are embracing digital tools, navigating financial systems, and confronting growing climate and economic risks. The study, which surveyed over 4,000 MSES across five major emerging market cities — Addis Ababa, Delhi, Lagos, São Paulo and Jakarta — employed adaptive cluster sampling and in-depth interviews to explore how digital adoption and financial inclusion affect business resilience.
