Santos del Carmen Palacio, cacao farmer and client of Accion partner Credife in Santo Domingo, Ecuador

Santos del Carmen Palacio feels more comfortable on his farm than he does anywhere else. His own father was a farmer, so Santos has been working the land his entire life, and he purchased his farm land 25 years ago. Though he couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else, the farming of his three hectares of cacao trees requires working long hours – most days he works from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. – and it also requires a great deal of patience.

The cacao trees take around three years to mature, and they only produce fruit for a few years before they need to be replaced. New trees cost U.S. $75 each, which is expensive for any farmer – but because farmers must wait so long for the trees to mature, it can take years before the product is able to be sold for profit. For cacao farmers, a small loan can help them to better manage their crops – and their incomes.
