Microfinance and Financial Inclusion Pioneer Earns Top Charity Rating for
Fiscal Management, Accountability and Transparency
Boston, MA, June 10, 2014– Accion, a pioneer and leader in financial inclusion, today announced that it has been awarded Charity Navigator’s four-star evaluation for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.
Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities, annually applies data-driven analysis to charities and nonprofits. Four stars is its highest rating, indicating that an organization excels, as compared to other U.S. charities, in successfully managing its finances in an efficient and effective manner.
“Receiving this four-star ‘exceptional’ designation indicates that Accion adheres to good governance and other best-practices in consistently executing its mission in a fiscally responsible way,” said Ken Berger, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only 25 percent of the charities we evaluate have received our highest rating, indicating that Accion outperforms most other charities in America.”
“Many donors rely on the Charity Navigator rating system to determine which nonprofits to support, and its assessments of management, transparency and follow-through provide a valuable tool in helping them make their decisions about giving,” said Michael Schlein, Accion’s president and CEO. “This four-star rating is important in helping us raise the funds to sustain our work in poor communities throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the U.S., and serves as continued motivation for us to manage our resources effectively and efficiently.”
