We are committed to strengthening microfinance institutions across the globe. Through the Smart Campaign, we are leading the charge for client protection in microfinance. Our Frontier Investments Group and Venture Lab are making impact investments in companies focused on the bottom of the pyramid. And the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion is working in partnership with Citi, Visa, MasterCard, Western Union and others toward full financial inclusion by 2020. During the Second Annual Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy, many of the world’s most actively engaged philanthropists came together to discuss solutions for extreme poverty. In the Forbes Insights report that followed, Alleviating Global Poverty: Catalysts of Change, Accion President and CEO Michael Schlein asserts: "To really have a financially inclusive world, mobile network operators, banks, retailers, payment companies – all of these groups need to see they are part of a movement."

Family in Latin America Providing access to microfinance in rural
Latin America

Since 2008, we have been working in rural Latin America to connect people to financial products and services. With the participation of six Accion partner institutions – Finamérica (Colombia), Credife (Ecuador), FAMA (Nicaragua), Mibanco (Peru) Banco Ademi (Dominican Republic) and CrediConfía (Mexico) – our Inter-American Development Bank-funded project has trained 420,000 microentrepreneurs and provided access to credit for 350,000 clients. Staff recently gathered for a closing seminar to discuss lessons learned from the five-year project.

Clients in India What will it take to reach full financial inclusion by 2020?

Today, leaders from Financial Inclusion 2020 shared their Roadmap to Financial Inclusion, a a series of recommendations that reveal the ways in which different sectors and industries can collaborate to create universal access to financial services. Working groups for the project were comprised of experts across the industry, and focused on technology, client protection, addressing customer needs and more.

Group Lending in Paraguay Risk and repayment: Spotlight on group lending in Paraguay

How can microfinance institutions judge their clients’ capacity to repay a loan? Microfinance institutions often need to rely on excellent judgment – and innovation. Accion Ambassador Maria Zotes shares how Financiera El Commercio in Paraguay ensures that everyone follows the required steps to secure a group loan from the institution – this, in turn, almost guarantees that the loan will be repaid.

New Mexico

Rosemary Lonewolf has been sculpting since she was a child. Pottery is deeply rooted in the culture of New Mexico’s Santa Clara pueblo, famous for its hand-crafted earthenware, and Rosemary’s family has carried the tradition through the generations. Today, she is keeping the tradition alive – with some help from Accion New Mexico • Arizona • Colorado.
