Finamerica Client Finamérica wins Accenture Colombia’s 2013 Innovation Award

“El Milagroso,” a savings product designed by Accion for Finamérica, has won both the Public and Jury Prizes in the Financial Services category of Accenture Colombia’s 2013 Innovation Awards. The product, designed as part of a multi-year Latin America savings project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, makes savings more attractive to existing credit clients, thus increasing their participation and promoting financial security.

PWD New tools help microfinance institutions become more inclusive

Persons with disabilities (PWD) make up 15 percent of the developing world’s population, but it is estimated that they represent only 0.5 percent of microfinance clients. The vast majority of PWDs have the capacity to use and benefit from access to transparent, reliable financial services – that’s why the Smart Campaign has joined forces with the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion and Fundación Paraguaya to create a set of how-to trainings and tools that will help MFIs become disability-friendly and inclusive.

Loan OfficersWhat can the U.S. learn about financial inclusion from the rest of the world?

Paul Breloff, Director of Accion’s Venture Lab, wrote recently for PopTech about the importance of the United States learning from innovations that take place in the developing world, especially in the financial inclusion field. He explains that many innovations arise out of necessity in less-developed countries and as workarounds in less-sophisticated technical and financial environments – but those innovations are frequently proving just as relevant in the United States as they are abroad.

Transforming communities in Paraguay

Lilian Britez is a long-time client of Accion partner institution Fundación Paraguaya, where she has been a solidarity group member for years. She learned to make decorative flowers, and also sells Avon products to supplement her income. But her dreams are much bigger.
