Michael Schlein Accion CEO takes on voluntary leadership role for New York City

Accion President and CEO Michael Schlein has been appointed to serve as the Chairman of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). While continuing in his role at Accion, he will oversee NYCEDC’s 27-member board of business, community, nonprofit and academic leaders, which helps guide the organization’s agenda. As the city’s primary economic development vehicle, the NYCEDC leverages the city’s assets to create jobs, drive growth, and improve quality of life across the five boroughs, using diverse tools such as urban planning, asset management, capital construction, and strategic investment.

VindhyaStart-ups with a cause attract investment in India

During the last five years, social impact start-ups have been on the rise in India – and they are attracting substantial investment while helping to meaningfully address a variety of social challenges. Vindhya e-Infomedia – one of Accion’s Frontier Investments Group’s portfolio companies – is one of those businesses. It is a successful business process outsourcing company with a unique twist: eighty percent of its 500 employees are women below the poverty line and those with physical disabilities.

Elisabeth Rhyne What’s next in the movement toward full financial inclusion?

Since the Financial Inclusion 2020 Global Forum took place in October 2013, staff at the Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion (CFI) have been busy laying the groundwork for the next big push in the drive for global financial access. Elisabeth Rhyne, the CFI’s managing director, recently shared some of her thoughts on what’s next in a blog post on Next Billion, including a new partnership with HelpAge to address the financial needs of our rapidly-growing older populations; a look at “on-ramps” to the use of formal financial services; and consideration of how behavioral insights can affect product design.
