League of American Communications Professionals Praises Microfinance Leader for Campaign Materials’ Clarity and Creativity

Boston, MA,  January 30, 2007 -

ACCION® International, a pioneer and leader in global microfinance, has received the Silver Magellan Award from the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) for its ‘Helping Millions Help Themselves’ campaign materials.  The distinction places ACCION’s collateral among the top 15 percent of total LACP submissions, recognizing the clarity, relevance and compelling nature of the materials.

‘Helping Millions Help Themselves’ was launched in October 2006 to raise $31 million for the funding of ACCION’s work in global poverty alleviation through microfinance.  The campaign’s goals include increasing the number of microentrepreneurs served by ACCION’s partners, to three million by 2008, and increasing the number of countries in which the organization works, from 23 to 33.

The campaign materials were developed with Boston design firm Communication Via Design, Ltd., with the goal of presenting a concise and targeted case for ACCION’s funding needs.  LACP awarded the materials with 93 out of a possible 97 points, ranking the collateral 61st out of 405 submitted to LACP worldwide.

“The 2006 Magellan Awards drew an unprecedented number of entries representing a broad range of industries and organizational sizes,” said Tyson Heyn, APR, LACP Principal.  “Winners demonstrated a laser focus on communications grounded in creativity and passion, which ultimately helped message recipients understand and appreciate its relevance and importance.”

A world pioneer in microfinance, ACCION was founded in 1961 and issued the first microloan in 1973 in Brazil.  Its ‘Helping Millions Help Themselves’ campaign materials were designed to inform the reader of the effectiveness of microfinance as a poverty alleviation tool and the importance of philanthropy to expand access to microfinance services.
