Become an Ambassador - Eligibility Requirements

The application period for the 2015 Ambassadors program has officially closed. If you are interested in the program and did not get a chance to apply this year, we encourage you to check back with us next year in order to be considered for acceptance into the 2016 cohort.


Eligibility Requirements

Ideal candidates will possess the following skills and meet the following requirements:

  • At least 21 years of age and a university graduate

  • Fluency in local languages, as needed by partner

  • Experience traveling and living overseas, preferably in a developing country

  • Excellent writing, communication and analytical skills

  • Interest in microfinance, economic development and/or social entrepreneurship

  • Ability to participate in the mandatory Ambassadors Training in Cambridge, MA

  • Ability to cover all travel and living expenses during the course of the program, including the training in Boston


Language Proficiency Requirements

All Ambassadors must be able to communicate fluently in the language in which the partner institution conducts its business. In Latin America, all partners conduct their business in Spanish, and therefore Spanish fluency is a firm requirement. In parts of India and Africa, English is the language in which business in conducted, and for those placements, beginner/intermediate local languages are an asset, but not required. Placements in Francophone Africa require fluency in French and fluent Hindi is required for one of our partners in Northern India.


Application Requirements

  • A current resume

  • A cover letter that answers these questions: Why do you want to be an Accion Ambassador? What do you hope to gain from the experience? What skills can you offer to your host MFI? How do you plan to finance this program?

  • A writing sample of any nature, no longer than 1,000 words

  • Exceptional candidates will be invited to have a phone interview and possible subsequent interviews with partner MFIs before final selection
