Mission: To provide quickly and timely financial and non financial services, accompanied by advisory and training, to the microenterprise, small business and rural communities, to achieve their sustained development in a massive manner, accelerating the progress of Guatemala.
History: Génesis Empresarial was founded in May 1988 by Fundación Tecnológica (FUNTEC) to facilitate productive loans to microenterprises and small businesses. Génesis Empresarial began lending in 1993 to rural communities to support electrification and potable water projects. In 1997, Génesis Empresarial became an independent foundation, separating itself from FUNTEC, in order to expand these services to our clients. Beginning in 1998 his credit program for women in the rural area known today as Village Banking and in the same year started to work with rural credit for housing, especially in housing improvements and new housing in phases.
ACCION’s Role: One of ACCION’s early projects was to train Génesis Empresarial on its credit methodology model through a Resident Advisor. Later, an ACCION technical assistance team optimized Génesis’ credit methodology through reengineering both the business processes and the credit products available to Génesis clients.
Borrower Profile: Of its 82,719 active clients, 80% percent are women. Génesis Empresarial's clients are typically market vendors, artisans, seamstresses, carpenters, shoemakers or bakers. Clients range from participants in rural, communal banks for women, with loans starting as low as $63, to owners of microenterprises and small businesses.
What’s New: ACCION’s Risk Management Unit is developing scoring systems for both client segmentation and credit approval.
