Mission: Real Microcrédito, an initiative by Banco Real ABN AMRO, offers small loans to growing businesses that lack access to conventional forms of credit. Through the provision of microcredit, Banco Real ABN AMRO is committed to the economic and social development of its borrowers, and to promoting Brazil’s economic growth.
History: ABN AMRO Bank, a multinational institution based in the Netherlands, began operations in Brazil in 1927. Since its acquisition of Banco Real in 1998, the bank has had a countrywide presence through its 2,350 branch offices. In 2001, Banco ABN AMRO approached ACCION for its professional expertise in launching a for-profit microlending subsidiary. Real Microcrédito began operations in July 2002 and disbursed its first loan in the São Paulo favela of Heliopolis the following month. Since mid-2006, Real Microcrédito has been expanding its operations to the Northeastern region.
ACCION’s Role: Real Microcrédito is a microlending institution with majority ownership held by ABN AMRO Real, Brazil’s fifth largest bank. For more than five years ACCION has been providing technical assistance to ABN AMRO with a focus on credit methodology, product design and management services.
Borrower Profile: Ninety-five percent of its clients are working in the informal sector and most run businesses that can be categorized as commercial/retail or service/production. Ninety-four percent have received working capital loans and six percent have applied for fixed assets loans.
What’s New: ABN AMRO has increased its focus on making microfinance a successful alternative for poorer clients. Mr. Flavio Weizenmann, the former General Manager retired in April 2006 and Mr. Jose Giovani Anversa took over as General Manager and has since promoted a very clear commercial approach. REAL Microcrédito is consolidating its operations, improving portfolio quality, and continuing its aggressive expansion.
Where They Work: Real Microcrédito’s Regional Headquarters are located in São Paulo but it has offices throughout Campinas, Baixada Fluminense, the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and in almost all the capitals of the northeast region.
