The Team

Monica Brand
Principal Director

Monica Brand has spent her career in the financial services and social enterprise sectors, expanding and enhancing the value offered to the majority. Ms. Brand currently manages Frontier Investments, whose mandate is to invest in early stage companies with disruptive business models that catalyze breakthrough innovation in financial inclusion. Prior to assuming responsibility for managing this fund, Ms. Brand launched and ran ACCION’s Marketing & Product Development Unit, where she oversaw the creation of new financial services to move the industry beyond microcredit.

Before joining ACCION, Ms. Brand worked in Cape Town, South Africa, where she founded Anthuri Catalysts to help prepare portfolio companies for investment from its sister venture capital firm, Anthuri Ventures. Ms. Brand began her career in financial services in California where she worked as a commercial loan officer and helped launch a $50 million statewide lending intermediary to finance small business and community facilities. Ms. Brand’s professional experience also includes training and teaching at all levels, including working with female entrepreneurs at the Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment (WISE) as a trainer and second-year MBAs at Harvard Business School as a case-writer. Ms. Brand currently serves as an adjunct professor at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of a masters-level course on impact investing.

Ms. Brand received both a M.B.A. and a master's of education from Stanford University and her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Williams College, where she graduated with honors. Ms. Brand serves on numerous boards including Compartamos Bank in Mexico, Paralife Holdings (a Swiss micro-insurance company), MicroFinance Currency Risk (MFX) Solutions (currency hedging and other risk management instruments for MFIs) and the D.C. Employment Justice Center. Ms. Brand is half-Peruvian and lives with her husband and twin children in Washington D.C.

David Maxson
Senior Investment Officer

David is responsible for investment sourcing, structuring and execution as well as portfolio management. Prior to joining ACCION, David was at Adelphi Capital, LLC where he acted as lead associate responsible for managing and supporting a range of client service and deal focused activities on transactions between $1 MM to $500 MM in value within growth/venture capital private equity investing and middle market investment banking. Additionally, David has over four years of experience in IT, consulting and engineering having previously worked at Health Science Communications; a pharmaceutical marketing and OMNICom Group company; PWC Consulting and Pratt & Whitney. David also holds a MHA from Cornell University and a BS in Manufacturing from WPI.

Michael Murai
Senior Investment Officer

Michael is responsible for investment sourcing, structuring and execution as well as portfolio management. Prior to joining ACCION, Michael was an associate at Citigroup Global Markets’ Global Structuring and Origination group where he participated in over $12 billion in securitizations. Additionally, Michael has a number of years of experience in private equity and investment banking having worked at Zephyr Management; an Africa focused private equity fund, as well as at CIBC World Markets’ Investment Banking group. Michael holds a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service as well as a BSBA from the McDonough School of Business also at Georgetown University. Michael was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and currently resides in Washington, DC.

Tiffany Goh
Analyst

Tiffany is responsible for evaluating new investment opportunities as well as helping to develop Frontier’s marketing and growth plans. Prior to joining ACCION in 2010, Tiffany was an investment analyst at Credit Suisse Strategic Partners in New York.   While at Strategic Partners, she focused on the valuation and execution of secondary private equity transactions. Tiffany holds a BS in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University.

Charlene Bachman

Program Assistant

 

Charlene is responsible for coordinating transaction activities and providing governance and marketing support for ACCION Global Investments. In addition, Charlene performs research surrounding Frontier's new investment initiatives. Prior to joining the ACCION Global Investments team, Charlene worked at Arlington Capital Partners, a private equity fund in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  Microfinance represented the cornerstone of Charlene's undergraduate studies at American University, where she obtained dual bachelor's degrees in Business Administration and International Studies with a minor in Spanish. Charlene's international experience includes studying abroad at the Universidad Católica Argentina in Buenos Aires and the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Viña del Mar, Chile and extensive travel within the Americas and Europe. As an undergraduate, Charlene interned at the Business Council for International Understanding, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Embassy of Ecuador in Washington, DC.
